Research Design: Brief Heads-Up

Let's talk a bit about research design. It is a proposal of your research. Your aim in making this is to make sure that your supervisors and examiners know what you want to do and how you will do it.

A research design has several sections. The organizations of the sections are as follows:

A. Title

State your title briefly under this section.

B. Research Background

You give exaplanation about your topic. Here, you summarize why you are doing this research and you can also state the significance of it.

C. Research Question/Problem

Formulate your question based on what you want to find from the research. Commonly, you will have one to three questions at most. You are more likely to have too big of a research when you have more than three questions. It is best if you consult your supervisor to trim you research scope.

D. Research Purpose

In this section, you point out the purpose of your research. It is actually a repetition of your research question but in this section you are writing the questions in form of statement.

E. Significance

In significance section, you write why your research is worth doing. You also need to convince the examiners who will benefit from your research and what will your research contribute to them.

F. Terminology

This section is a glossary of the keywords in your research. For example, your research is about mind mapping technique. You have to give a brief exaplanation on that in this section.

G. Frame of Theory

You have to do your reading to write this section because you need theories to shape you research and to give clear orientation for your study. Reading theories will give you broader view of the topic. It is also helpful for you in constructing research instruments.

H. Frame of Concept

You write how you will do the research in this section. Describe each step of your research from collecting data to analysis. Be as detail as possible. Make sure people can imagine what you will do after reading this section.

I. Methodology

In here, you explain who will be your participant, what tools you are going to use, what research method suitable for your research.

J. Analysis

In this section, you explain how you will analyze the
data you have collected.

You probably are going to see various formats of research design which is different from this one. Don't worry. Just follow your supervisor's advise. It happens because some research methods required extra section while some others omit certain section. Use those formats as a starter.

Just to be safe, check our Ruang Baca FKIP because they store some samples of Research Design. Don't stick on one sample. Try to collect as many Research Designs as possible. Focus on designs with similar method with your research.

What is it?

Hi fellow students of English Education Department, Tanjungpura University.

I am really anxious to start something called Thesis Group. Like its name, it is a facebook group with people who have done thesis, are doing thesis and are going to do it soon. Actually I have been thinking about this kind of group since mid-2012. At that time, I was struggling with my thesis. It was very hard to find someone I could talk to.

That is why I decide to make it happen today.

The procedure is like this. I am going to put a link of my blog every time I write something thesis related. It could be my opinion on the questions you asked or my experience while doing thesis. I’ll try to invite as many alumni as possible to get people who experienced in various kinds of research methodology. You can invite your friend, too.

Of course, we are not here to take over your supervisor’s role. But I am hoping you can get people you can brainstorm with to lift a bit of your burden when thinking alone.

I am open to suggestions so please give me any kind of input so this process can run more smoothly.
